| Thanks for showing an interest in what I do. I guess I started thinking about playing the drums after some good friends had persuaded me to ask my father for his drum kit so we could start a band. My Dad had been a professional drummer for over 20 years (Stompin Tom Conners/ Tommy Hunter) but had decided to retire from the business. At first he said no! I let it go and didn't think about playing again until I accidentally passed by a drum shop and went inside. My life changed that day and I was hooked. I soon started lessons with Keith Blackley and a few other local teachers. I then convinced my Dad to let me use the bass drum and snare drum and slowly built that kit up over the next two years adding one piece at a time. After joining my high school stage band and a couple jam bands I decided to go to college for music and study jazz but I didn't stay long because I had landed a job at that same drum shop I had walked into years before and decided I was learning more from the teachers there. It was a great place to meet a lot of the top local players and make important connections. I listened to a lot of great music there, learned as much as I could and loved the environment. Having the key to a drum store 24/ 7 was a dream come true, unfortunately the store went out of business after a few years. I was then given the chance to join a top 40 band that was touring across Canada. It was another great experience and after a year of playing 6 nights a week all across Canada I returned home , hungry to expand my musical vocabulary. When I got back I played everywhere possible covering styles from African, Country and Rock, to Latin and Blues. I traveled quite a lot and played overseas as far as the Middle East and Thailand, but it wasn’t until I met guitarist Kenny Greer (Red Rider) and began touring with Big Faith that I felt like I was making real progress in my career. Since that time I have been lucky to play for some of the artists I grew up listening to as well as many new ones and I feel very fortunate to have shared in their music. I have a small list up on the artists page. Troy |
